Hal Higdon: On The Run

Ultramarathon Training

Month 5: February

Continue your base training, as in January. So far, you have not been running what might be called "killer mileage." Your weekly mileage for the first six weeks of base training should be around 30 to 40 miles. For the first two weekends in February, your long runs following the schedule mentioned above would be 18 and 13. This sixth and final week of base training is a "step-back" week, offering an opportunity to gather your forces for the next push upwards. For the next half dozen weeks, you will follow weeks 1 through 6 of George Parrott's 50-K training program, presented on page 89 of How To Train. Your weekly mileage commitment continues to sneak upwards. Long runs for the last two weeks of February are suggested as 20 and 23 miles; the weekly mileage, 50. Continue to run those miles slowly, much slower than you would run in a marathon, perhaps even slower than you plan to run Comrades.
